Brett Dean Appointed To The BBC Symphony Orchestra

Composer and violist Brett Dean has been appointed Artist in Association at the BBC Symphony Orchestra for three years from 2014 to 2017.

“The position will see a significant number of Dean’s works being performed by the BBC SO…. as well as him working with the orchestra as soloist and conductor.”

Performances include the solo  in Dean’s own Viola Concerto, conducted by the orchestra’s Chief Conductor Sakari Oramo, the UK premiere of Dean’s The Annunciation and the London premiere of Dean’s trumpet concerto, Dramatis personae featuring trumpeter Håkan Hardenberger for whom the piece was composed.

Founded in 1930, the orchestra performs its concerts at London’s Barbican Centre and is the centrepiece of the annual BBC Proms. John Adams was appointed Artist in Association in 2003. The orchestra has also championed the music of Sir Michael Tippett, John Cage, James MacMillan and Elliott Carter.
