Create NSW SoundLab Residency Program Calls For Applicants

Create NSW and Arup are calling for expressions of interest from musicians and sound artists to take part in a residency program, which includes access to SoundLab, a high-end Sydney-based acoustics lab owned by Arup.

Create NSW Executive Director Chris Keely said the SoundLab Residency Program will enable  successful musicians and sound artists to experiment, design and create.

“This unique SoundLab Residency Program will provide an important opportunity for up to four NSW-based musicians or groups of artists to make music and sound in a high-end technical space designed for critical listening, and the exploration of technology and sound,” Mr Keely said.

Nick Boulter, Regional Arts and Culture leader from Arup said SoundLab was initially envisaged as a tool to communicate acoustic experiences to clients in a hyper-realistic 3-D environment, and the team at Arup have found more and more uses, including working with artists. SoundLab has been used to inform the design of some of the world’s best arts and culture venues.
“In New York, Björk and her team used the Arup SoundLab to help develop and deliver the final form of her on-stage acoustic reverb chamber for the Cornucopia tour,” Mr Boulter said.

The successful artists will receive $2,500 in funding support from Create NSW. Arup’s major in-kind contribution for the use of the SoundLab for 2-4 weeks equates to approximately $7,000 per week for musicians and sound artists.

Through the residency, artists will be encouraged to network with the Arup team, exposing them to potential opportunities for collaboration on future projects.

Expressions of interest for the residency program are now open and close Monday 26 July 2021.
