Deutsche Grammophon: 8 Legendary Albums From The Originals
From the Deutsche Grammophon catalogue comes an 8 CD set of recordings The Originals, by some of the greatest legends of classical music (DG 4794110).
Recorded at various times between 1965 and 1980 in venues like the Vienna Musikverein Grosser Saal, the Berlin Philharmonie, the Hanover Beethovensaal and the Jesus-Christus-Kirche in Berlin, the recordings were originally made as LPs.
The compilation contains some historic performances as well as documenting recorded music as it sounded in the later half of the 20th century – well within our lifetime. Wilhelm Kempff plays Beethoven sonatas, Marta Argerich plays Chopin and Liszt, Herbert von Karajan conducts the Berlin Philharmonic in the music of Richard Strauss and Mstislav Rostropovich in a performance of Dvorak’s cello concerto. There is a choral work too with Eugen Jochum conducting the choir and orchestra of the Deutschen Oper Berlin in Orff’s Carmina Burana with soprano Gundula Janowitz, tenor Gerhard Stolze and baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau with the Schonberg Boys Choir.
