Great Australian Wagnerians In Recital: Deborah Humble
Mezzo-soprano Deborah Humble accompanied by pianist Stephen Mould, performs the first concert in the series Great Australian Wagnerians in Recital with a programme of songs by Brahms followed by Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder.
Sparked by the success of The Ring in Melbourne in 2013, Great Australian Wagnerians in Recital aims to bring the songs of Wagner and others to the recital hall. Humble herself was lauded for her portrayals of Erde and Waltraute in this production.
Wagner composed the 5 Wesendonck Lieder in 1857-8 to poems by Mathilde Wesendonck, the wife of his patron Otto. It is said that Wagner and Mathilde were in love and that Wagner wrote the last of the songs Dreams (Träume ) to be sung at Mathilde’s window on her birthday.
Two of the Wesendonck Lieder were written as studies for Tristan and Isolde. This recital is a wonderful opportunity to experience the Drama and the passion of Wagner’s music in a shorter and more intimate context.
