The Australian Haydn Ensemble, under the Artistic Direction of Skye McIntosh, with Guest Director and fortepiano soloist Erin Helyard and solo cellist Daniel Yeadon presents the timeless music of Haydn and Music.

Dr Erin Helyard, one of Australia’s finest keyboard players, expert in historically-informed performance and respected musical director and co-director of Pinchgut Opera, leads this jubilant concert of classical masterworks and is soloist in Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.14, K449.

World-leading exponent in historical cello playing – Daniel Yeadon, joins AHE again as soloist following his brilliant performance of CPE Bach’s A minor Concerto last year, this time playing Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C Major. Despite being one of his most performed works for the cello, this concerto is rarely heard on period instruments. This will be a rare opportunity for audiences to hear this important work performed as it may have been in Haydn’s time.

The two concertos are balanced by two symphonies – Haydn’s Symphony no 83 in G minor, ‘The Hen’ (La Poule), named for the entertaining clucking theme heard in the first movement – and Mozart’s Symphony No. 37, actually mostly written by Joseph Haydn’s younger brother, Michael Haydn. This symphony was long thought to have been written by Mozart and performed all over the world under his authorship, due to a manuscript copy in Mozart’s hand. Research has revealed that Mozart, admiring Michael much, copied the work adding his own touches to the work – including a beautiful and dramatic opening adagio as well as adding flute and oboe solos in the slow movement.

This concert also marks two major milestones for the Australian Haydn Ensemble: their City Recital Hall debut and the launch of their debut recording on ABC Classics.
