Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Sydney presents a high-spirited production of the Pirates of Penzance under the stage direction of Victoria Watson. Gilbert and Sullivan’s swashbuckling operetta follows the adventures of young Frederic, who was mistakenly apprenticed to a band of pirates after his nursemaid mistook his father’s instructions to apprentice him to a ‘pilot’. What follows is a series of hilarious misunderstandings and shenanigans with boisterous pirates, doe-eyed maidens and bumbling police.

Young Frederick has been bound to a band of pirates until his 21st birthday and is ready to go forth into life. But in a cruel twist of fate, his birthday falls on 29 February so officially he only turns 21 in 63 years!

The only woman Frederick ever saw when he was with the pirates was his nursemaid, and he is raring to meet other women. He soon meets and Mabel and they fall madly in love. Although they can’t be together until Frederick leaves the pirates in another 63 years, Mabel vows to wait for him faithfully. The pirates want to marry Mabel’s sisters, and her father, the Major General, is not happy.

A series of riotous antics together with wonderful melodies and tongue-twisting songs leads to a happy ending for all.

Joining Stage Director and SoundsLikeSydney correspondent Victoria Watson  in the creative team are Musical Director Rod Mounjed and Choreographer Sarah Pearce.
