Intervarsity Choral Festival Performs Verdi
The 66th Australian Intervarsity Choral Festival Presents Verdi’s Requiem performed by the Sydney Intervarsity Choral Festival Chorus and the Willoughby Symphony. Also known by its longer title, Messa da Requiem, this classical masterpiece combines the dramatic soaring melodies of Italian opera with the solemn and mesmerising intensity of sacred work.
Verdi has set the Roman Catholic funeral mass is for four soloists, double choir and orchestra.It was composed in memory of Alessandro Manzoni, an Italian poet and novelist whom Verdi admired and premiered at the San Marco church in Milan on 22 May 1874, on the first anniversary of Manzoni’s death. Today it is more often performed in the concert hall than in the church.
The choir and orchestra will be joined by four soloists – soprano Eva Kong, mezzo-soprano Liane Keegan, tenor Jaewoo Kim and bass Pelham Andrews – all under the baton of renowned Australian conductor Simon Kenway.
The Festival is an annual gathering of members of university choirs from around Australia that takes place in Sydney from the 14th – 25th of January and features two weeks of singing, socialising, intensive rehearsals, workshops and fun culminating in this performance.
