Salon Music Concert Series – Sunrise And Sunset At Elizabeth Bay House

Sydney Living Museums and Opera Australia

Opera Australia and Sydney Living Museums reinvent the tradition of the salon to bring together music, history and conversation in the intimate settings of Sydney’s historic houses.  Opera Australia has curated a special artistic programme, tailored to the unique history of each historic concert venue.

Whether by accident or design, Elizabeth Bay House was built in direct alignment with the sun’s rays on the winter solstice, creating a magnificent display each year.  Inspired by this phenomenon, the concert programme is themed around sunrise and sunset.

After the concert, audience members have the opportunity of viewing the magnificent interiors of Elizabeth Bay House – once considered ‘the finest house in the colony’, and then to enjoy the views of Sydney Harbour over light refreshments served in the dining room and verandah while mingling with the artists.

Elizabeth Bay House is one of the most splendid private houses ever built in Australia and still arouses our delight and astonishment. Its elegant rooms and fine proportions, sweeping staircase and lavish furnishings reveal the tastes and aspirations of its original owner, Alexander Macleay, the Colonial Secretary for New South Wales. Elizabeth Bay House is an iconic Sydney home, with an iconic Sydney history of obsession for property and position stretched beyond means and undone by changing financial times.

The artists: Anna Yun, mezzo-soprano with musicians from the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra.

The programme: BACH Chaconne from Partita No. 2 in D minor/ HANDEL Aria from Partenope – Sento amor con novi dardi/ RESPIGHI  Il tramonto (The Sunset)/ HAYDN String Quartet Opus 76 No. 4 – “The Sunrise” Quartet.

Tickets: $185 per person include concert, cocktail reception and opportunity to meet the artists and curators.
