Kathryn Selby performs Mozart

Sydney Symphony welcomes Sydney pianist Kathryn Selby AM to the stage for what promises to be a virtuoso performance. Selby has kindly stepped in to replace Geoffrey Lancaster, who has had to withdraw because of illness. The performance will also include the gorgeous, decadent sounds from the Vienna of Gustav Klimt.

A nostalgic mood is set up by Franz Schreker’s Chamber Symphony, composed during World War I. Schreker was the ultimate Romantic at the dawn of a modern age. He shared with Mozart a theatrical instinct and exquisite craftsmanship. And with just 24 players he shapes a sound world of gleaming opulence and ravishing harmonies, sometimes firmly resting on its 19th century heritage, sometimes dancing into a realm of shadows and nostalgia.

Mozart’s final piano concerto is full of drama and tender expression, music that speaks as powerfully to listeners in the 21st century as it did two hundred years ago.
