Pinchgut Presents Iphigénie En Tauride In December
For its December 2014 production, Pinchgut Opera will perform Gluck’s Iphigénie en Tauride. Considered to be Gluck’s best work, it is the sixth of seven operas he wrote in Paris. It is a rarely performed masterwork and with it, Pinchgut Opera also marks the 300 anniversary of Gluck’s birth.
Iphigénie en Tauride is an intensely dramatic and tightly constructed work. It is about familial love and friendship, but the waters run deep, and noble aims of sacrifice, duty and protection are played out within a huge and bloody drama set in the grandeur of baroque theatre.
Returning to Pinchgut to direct Iphigénie en Tauride is Lindy Hume, who directed Idomeneo for the company in 2006. Hume is one of the nation’s leading directors, who is presently Artistic Director of Opera Queensland. In previous roles include Artistic Director of the Sydney Festival and the Perth International Arts Festival. She has created more than 50 operatic productions both in Australia and overseas. Of Iphigénie en Tauride, she says, “A piece like this is like an electrical jolt – it reminds us of the human family, the connection that binds the ancient communities who first heard this story with our own.”
