Listen in to the Sydney Symphony’s performance of Britten’s War Requiem from the Sydney Opera House on ABC Classic FM on Saturday night. Conducted by Vladimir Ashkenazy and featuring soloists Russian soprano Dina Kuznetsova, British tenor Andrew Staples and German baritone Dietrich Henschel with the Sydney Children’s Choir and Sydney Philharmonia Choirs.

Despite its name, the composition is a powerful statement against the horrors of war, written in our times, (1962) and set with the text of WW I poet Wilfred Owen. It was commissioned for and performed at the re-consecration of Coventry Cathedral, destroyed by the Luftwaffe in WW II.
