One of Australasia’s finest piano trios, the NZTrio brings to Sydney an Australasian Pacific mix of works by living composers titled East From Here

Loved by classical and contemporary audiences, the NZTrio is renowned for its bold and masterfully curated programs. Having performed together for 14 years, with three Doctorates of Music between them, violinist Justine Cormack, cellist Ashley Brown and pianist Sarah Watkins are seamless in their ensemble dynamics.

East From Here will feature energetic and invigorating music that showcases the works of outstanding contemporary composers. The afternoon performance opens with a work from New Zealand composer Claire Cowan, followed by the earthy sounds of Australia’s Stuart Greenbaum work titled 800 Million Heartbeats, and compelling music from award-winning Taiwanese composer, Yu-Hui Chang. Also featured in the first half of the show is 2011 Pulitzer Prize Winner, Zhou Long’s Spirit of Chimes, inspired by the sounds of ancient Chinese instruments.

The second half of the program will include an equally rich repertoire with sounds from Chinese/New Zealand composer, Gao Ping, and Indonesian/New Zealand composer, Wayan Yudane. Concluding the concert will be an extraordinary piece from New Zealand’s John Psathas, known for composing the opening and closing music of the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.

NZTrio eschews preconceptions of classical music being stuffy or intimidating by engaging their listeners with intimate and dynamic performances. East From Here is a unique experience that mixes musical cultures and genres as well as inspiring people of all walks of life to see classical music as accessible and meaningful.
