Warm up with Classic Spain
Dispel the mid-winter chills with the Willoughby Symphony Orchestra’s June/July programme themed around Classic Spain.
The orchestra, conducted by Warwick Potter with solo guitarist Slava Grigoryan will be conjuring up images of warmth and fiery passion in this programme which includes the very popular Concierto de Aranjuez by Rodrigo, Arriaga’s Overture to Los Esclavos Felices (The Happy Slaves) and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 in C major, op. 21, as well as the world premiere of the winning entry fom this year’s WSO/2MBS Young Composer Award.
Warwick Potter trained at the Royal College of Music in London and moved to Australia in 2002 where he now conducts the University of Queensland Symphony Orchestra, the Queensland Youth Orchestra Wind Symphony and the Queensland Young Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra. He lectures at UQ in instrumental conducting. In 2012 he has conducted the West Australian Symphony Orchestra and later, will conduct the Canberra and Tasmanian Symphpony Orchestras as well as Brisbane’s Camerata of St John.
Slava Grigoryan is a well recognised classical guitarist who has performed around the world and made several recordings for Sony and for ABC Classics. The winner of two ARIA Awards, he performs solo as well as with the ensemble Saffire and features with his guitarist brother Leonard on My Latin Heart, a June CD release from baritone José Carbo (ABC Classics).
